Food Not Lawns
Magic Mama stewards a 40' x 120' "lawn" in a Wisconsin town. The year she moved in, Magic Mama proceeded to dig up as much sod as possible, plant wildflower seeds and put in a giant spiral labyrinth in the back yard. The intention is to grow food, not grass. Food for birds, pollinators and beneficial insects as well as the human family who occupies the house on the lot. Recently, a new family moved into the neighborhood and began hosting Food Not Lawns meetings. The name of this movement was coined by Heather Coburn Flores who is a pioneer in the current food revolution. She has authored a book by the same name which is recommended reading for anyone interested in reclaiming land and healing our relationships with the Earth and each other.
