Born Again!

This Lava Goddess resides in Lava Tree State Park on the Big Island of Hawaii. At this time of year, in the Northern Hemisphere, we welcome the return of spring. The Earth Herself is being born again! What has seemed dead is rising; plants push their way up from the underworld, as Persephone returns.

There are many ancient Goddesses who lend their names to this time of celebration: Eostar-Eostre-Ostara is a Germanic Goddess of fertility, dawn, new beginnings and spring. Esther, the Jewish queen who is celebrated during the festival of Purim. Ishtar is the Babylonian Goddess of the moon, morning and evening stars. The moon is responsible for stabilizing the orbital tilt of the Earth which creates the rhythm of the seasons, allowing for conditions that nurture life on this planet. Easter traditions still include the symbols sacred to the ancient matriarchal cultures - eggs and rabbits. Rabbits and hares have their babies in the spring and have come to represent magic, mystery and fertility. Birds everywhere are nesting and laying eggs, the hens on the farm are providing us with plenty!

Spring Equinox is a time to re-member the sacred balance; an affirmation of life and the mysterious power of regeneration. Death and Life are inextricably linked. We must give as much as we take in order to maintain balance. It is with great gratitude that I honor Mother Earth and celebrate this time of rebirth - planting seeds and singing songs -Blessed Be!
